Richmond to Conduct Survey of Community Needs

19 June 2008

The City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department has commissioned a survey of Richmond residents to find out how to better provide parks, recreation and cultural programs and services to the public.

“The City would like to hear the views of both users and non-users of our facilities and programs,” explains Lucy Tompkins, Acting Manager of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Projects and Programs. “The results will be used as a basis for refining and planning the department’s services to ensure the City meets the growing needs of the community.”

Beginning this week, a random sample of residents will be contacted by Concerto Research, who have been contracted by the City, to participate in a telephone survey. The intention is to have 1,400 surveys complete within three weeks. The survey is being conducted in English, Chinese, Tagalog and Punjabi.

The City will also be holding focus groups with residents and community group representatives in the fall. The focus groups will be one time sessions to discuss specific topics. Residents interested in participating are asked to call Recreation and Cultural Services at 604-276-4300.

Richmond is a multicultural and ethnically diverse community with 58% of residents born outside of Canada. This study hopes to provide City staff with an in-depth understanding of all segments of the community in order to better meet the needs of Richmond residents.
