Newly Announced Provincial Transit Plan Seeks to Lower Emissions by 2020

14 January 2008

The BC Provincial Government today released a $14 billion Provincial Transit Plan which includes major improvements to the Metro Vancouver transit system.

The plan which sets goals for 2020, allows for expansion of Rapid Transit in several areas of Metro Vancouver and includes a line connecting Canada Line to UBC and Broadway Station, as well as additional Rapid Bus routes connecting with Canada Line and other Rapid Transit systems. In addition, the plan calls for funding for new energy efficient buses and expanded handyDART and custom transit services and improved cycling amenities.

The goals are to increase transit usage and reduce green house gas emissions by 4.7 million tonnes cumulatively by 2020.

Successful implementation of the Provincial Transit Plan calls for cost sharing with other levels of government of up to $11.1 billion in new funding, with the Province committing up to $4.75 Billion.
