Richmond Among Most Liveable Communities in the World

The City of Richmond has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious 2007 Liveable Communities (LivCom) Awards.
The LivCom Awards were launched in 1997 and are endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme. LivCom is the world’s only Awards Competition focussing on Best Practice regarding the management of the local environment. The objective of LivCom is to improve the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of liveable communities.
“This is a tremendous honour and a testament to the constant efforts of the City, our citizens and our other community partners,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Our entire community is committed to making Richmond a better place in which to live and this selection confirms we are making progress toward that goal.”
Richmond is a finalist for the Whole City Award in the category for communities with populations between 75,001 and 200,000. The finalists in this category are:

- Ipswich, Queensland, Australia
- Kakamigahara City, Japan
- Norwich, England
- Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
- Pecs, Hungary
- Portsmouth, Virginia, USA
- Santa Clarita, California, USA
- Mancomunidad del Sureste de Gran Canaria, Spain
The Whole City Awards are based on six criteria:
- Community Sustainability
- Enhancement of the Landscape
- Heritage Management
- Planning for the Future
- Environmentally Sensitive Practises
- Healthy Lifestyles
The finals for the LivCom Awards are being held in Westminster, England from November 22-26, beginning with a one-day Sustainability Summit. Mayor Brodie will lead a Richmond delegation, which will make a 40-minute final presentation to the judging panel, whose final selections will be announced on November 26, 2007.
The LivCom Awards were formally known as the International Nations In Bloom. Richmond previously won this competition in 2000. In addition to the Whole City Awards, prizes will also be awarded within the individual criteria areas.
