International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel

07 December 2007

The Richmond Committee on Disability is proud to announce that they will be hosting the “First Annual International Wheelchair Bonspiel”. The Bonspiel will be held at:

Dates: December 12, 2007 to and including December 15, 2007
Location: The Richmond Curling Club
5540 Hollybridge Way, Richmond
Admission: Attendance of the games is free.

A total of 8 teams from across Canada, including Vancouver Island, a local team from the Lower Mainland, the Canadian National Selection Camp, as well as Great Britain, Scotland, and Norway will be competing for a cash prize pool of nearly $5,500.00.

The level of competition is anticipated to be very high as there will be Paralympic Gold Medal winners and other National and regional medal winners competing. Several of the players prior to this competition took part in the 2006 Paralympics, in Torino, Italy, where Canada won the gold medal.

This will be the largest cash spiel for wheelchair curlers to date, and is a prelude leading up to the 2010 Paralympic games in Vancouver. It is hoped that this being the inaugural event of its kind, that this bonspiel will be an annual event for years to come.

There will be no charge for attendance to the games and everyone is welcome.
