16 May 2007

Get your picture taken with an Olympic torch when the City of Richmond and the Richmond Spirit of BC committee host a unique outdoor public open house to mark the 1,000 Day Countdown to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Event Name: The 1,000 Day Countdown Open House
Date: Saturday, May 19, 2007
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: The dyke in front of the Richmond Oval construction site
Near the Hollybridge Way Pump Station

Saturday, May 19, 2007 will mark 1,000 days until the Games open and, to mark the occasion, an outdoor public open house will be held on the dyke in front of the Richmond Oval construction site, near the Hollybridge Way pump station.

City staff and community volunteers from the Richmond Spirit of BC Committee and the Richmond Chinese Community Society will be on hand to talk about the project progress and answer questions about Richmond’s role as a Venue City for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Construction is rapidly progressing on the Oval, with the first floor foundation nearly complete and work beginning on the second and third levels. The first roof span is scheduled to be installed in early June and the Oval remains on target for opening in the fall of 2008. The Oval will be home to the long track speed skating competition for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Come learn about the remarkable progress being made on one of the largest construction sites in Richmond’s history.

As part of the Getting Richmond Moving program to encourage physical activity and a healthier community, Richmond residents are encouraged to go for a walk, run or ride on the dyke and incorporate a visit to our special outdoor open house into your exercise!

Participants can get a snapshot of themselves holding an Olympic torch from the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games and learn about the Olympic Torch Relay. There will also be free giveaways and draw prizes for those who drop by, including bottled water and sports drinks courtesy of Coca-Cola to help rehydrate those participants who’ve taken up the challenge to combine physical activity with their visit.
