New Steveston Water Park Ready to Make a Big Splash
07 June 2007
After three years of fundraising and anticipation, the Steveston Water Park is now complete and ready to be opened to the community!
The Steveston Water Park Official Opening will take place:
Date: Saturday, June 16, 2007 Time: Begins at 11:00 a.m. Location: Steveston Community Park
The event will start with a formal ribbon cutting by Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Ben Branscombe, President of the Steveston Community Society. The event will also feature Taiko drumming performances, arts and crafts, face painting, and free hot dogs courtesy of the Steveston Community Society.
The Steveston Water Park is marine-themed with several interactive spray elements where children, working together, can change the flow of water. There are separate areas for pre-school and school-aged children with the pre-school area having more gentle, ground spray and misting features while the school-age area has more boisterous action.
The Steveston Water Park is approximately 30 per cent larger than the King George Water Park and utilizes a state of the art re-circulating water treatment system. It is universally accessible, and use of the water park by children with disabilities will be further facilitated by the donation of waterproof wheelchairs donated to the Steveston Community Society.
This project is a partnership between the City of Richmond and the Steveston Community Society who have been tirelessly fundraising for the past three years and have contributed $530,000 toward the project. The commitment by the Steveston Community Society to raise funding for this project has been a tremendous success due to the high level of community support and incredible volunteer fundraising efforts. The City of Richmond is funding the balance of this $1.238 million project as part of the realization of the Steveston Park Vision Plan, formulated with community input and approved by Council in 2000.
