Lawn Sprinkling Regulations Begin June 1 2007
May 28, 2007
The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) reminds residents and businesses that lawn sprinkling regulations take effect Friday, June 1, 2007.
Sprinkling regulations apply only to lawns. Vegetable gardens, shrubs, trees and flower beds can be watered at any time.
Lawn sprinkling is allowed under the following terms:
- Even-numbered addresses
- 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- Wednesdays and Saturdays only
- Odd-numbered addresses
- 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- Thursdays and Sundays only.
The sprinkling of lawns at times other than those listed above are prohibited and subject to a $75 fine. An exception permit for new lawns is available for a fee of $30 from:
Richmond City Hall
Information Counter (Main floor)
Located at 6911 No 3 Road
This permit will allow you to sprinkle new lawns outside restricted times.
Reducing water consumption during peak periods helps maintain water pressure to all customers and ensures a sufficient water supply in the summer. Using less water during this period of high demand helps reduce or defer the need for system upgrades to the water supply infrastructure, including dams, pipes and pumping stations. This supports the financial sustainability goals of the GVRD’s Sustainable Region Initiative.
Lawn watering tips:
- Most lawns only need about 2.5 centimetres of water a week, which can easily be applied by sprinkling once a week.
- Water only when necessary and early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
- Consider using an automatic timer to conveniently comply with sprinkling regulations and prevent overwatering.
- Properly designed and installed automatic irrigation systems can reduce water consumption through precise coverage and control.
- Don’t water on windy days.
