Arts and Cultural Community Scan & Economic Impact Study

06 September 2007

If you are interested in Richmond’s arts and culture, the City of Richmond wants to hear from you. The City of Richmond is in the process of completing an arts and culture community scan and mapping project as well as an economic impact study. Richmond residents are being asked for their input to help identify and assess the City’s cultural assets, including visual, performing and literary arts.

“We are inviting Richmond residents to fill out a questionnaire online to identify and assess the City’s cultural assets,” says Jane Fernyhough, Manager, Culture & Heritage Services for the City of Richmond. “This survey will provide community leaders with a detailed analysis of the scope and depth of arts and culture in Richmond.”

Information gathered over the next few months will be used to assist in meeting the goals first identified in the 2004 “City of Richmond’s Arts Strategy.” The study will provide a comprehensive inventory of non-for-profit local arts and cultural organizations; private arts and cultural businesses (including professional artists), cultural facilities and audiences as well as identify perceived gaps in facilities and cultural experiences. The Economic Impact Study will identify opportunities within the cultural and business communities to better develop the cultural economy within the municipality.

Preliminary research and data gathering is now underway for the City of Richmond Cultural Scan. If you are interested in Richmond’s Arts and Culture, be sure to visit www.richmond.ca/culturalsurvey  to provide your input.

This project is funded through a grant from Legacies Now/Arts Now and a coalition of cultural partners. The partners are: the Richmond Arts Coalition, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce through the Business, Arts & Culture Committee, Gateway Theatre, Tourism Richmond, the Vancouver Children’s Art Gallery and Literacy Society and the City of Richmond - Cultural Services Section.

The expected completion date for the Arts and Cultural Community Scan and Economic Impact Study is March 2008.
