Salute the Volunteers Who Help Our Community

17 April 2007

The City of Richmond would like to recognize the many volunteers who give their time to help others in the community during National Volunteer Week, April 15 to 21, 2007.

The City of Richmond relies on volunteers and non-profit organizations as an integral part in the delivery of services and programs and values them as one of the most important resources we have in our community. Each year volunteers make a difference in Richmond by giving their time to special events, diversity services, arts and heritage services, older adults, youth services, parks programs and many other services throughout the community.

Volunteering is the most fundamental act of citizenship and philanthropy in society. It is an extension of being a good neighbour: it moves citizens from the front porch into the neighbourhood and it transforms a collection of houses into a community.

For information about volunteer opportunities in Richmond Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, contact your local civic facility or call 604-276-4300.

Statistics Canada survey found that 12 million Canadians or 45% of the adult population volunteered in 2004. Their contributions totalled almost 2 billion hours, an amount equivalent to 1 million full-time jobs.
