River Road Realignment Now Open in Richmond
1 May 2007
The new alignment of River Road from No. 2 Road to Hollybridge Way in Richmond is now open to public traffic.
Eastbound motorists travelling on River Road will be able to continue directly onto Hollybridge Way without stopping in order to promote continuous traffic flow on this busy route. However, northbound and southbound traffic on Hollybridge Way, will now be subject to two-way stopping where Hollybridge intersects with River Road.
The original section of River Road in this area was closed in late, 2005 to allow for construction of the Richmond Oval and a waterfront plaza and park. The newly constructed section of River Road has now been realigned to run along the former railway corridor immediately to the south of the Oval site.
Eventually, the realigned section of River Road will connect with the planned North Loop Road, which will run from Hollybridge Way to the north end of No. 3 Road, along the current railway corridor. The North Loop Road will be part of the City’s ring road network designed to provide alternative routes for traffic moving through and around Richmond City.
Construction of the North Loop Road is expected to proceed in phases over the next several years. As new owner of the spur line, the City has contracted with CPR to continue to maintain and operate portions of the Van Horne Spur as a private siding up until 2010 in order to provide continued service for an existing rail customer.
