Richmond Challenges Others to Turn it Off!

The City of Richmond, a leader in energy efficiency, is stepping up and challenging other cities and municipalities to see which city facility can reduce energy consumption the most through behavioural and operational changes for 2007 and beyond. This challenge stems from the Turn it Off BC! campaign organized by the 30 Days of Sustainability Society.

Richmond will be tracking monthly consumption, comparing 2006 and 2007 readings. The Challenge: the City wants other municipalities to reduce their May 2007 energy consumption from 2006, as well as track monthly consumption reduction to see who has made the greatest gain in lowering energy usage when 30 Days of Sustainability launches again in 2008.

Richmond has received many awards, honouring its leadership in energy efficiency and excellence in energy management. Richmond, one of nine BC Hydro Power Smart Certified clients, continues to be the only Power Smart Certified municipality in the province. Richmond has held this status since 2003 thanks to its outstanding record and continuing commitment to reducing energy use.

The Turn it Off BC! campaign, in partnership with BC Hydro, wants to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of energy conservation by asking BC communities to literally turn their lights and other energy consuming devices off for one evening. Richmond City Hall will go “dark” on Wednesday, May 16.

30 Days of Sustainability is an annual event designed to celebrate, stimulate and create awareness around sustainability issues. This year, it kicked off on Earth Day, April 22 and will continue until May 21. Through programs and activities, 30 Days of Sustainability wants Western Canada to be known as one of the most sustainable places in the world .
