Richmond Conducting Police Service Review

14 February 2007

A policing review is now under way at the City of Richmond to provide Council with information regarding alternative models for the most appropriate policing service.

“Richmond is a vibrant place undergoing very significant changes,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This review is part of an ongoing process of assessment of service levels and delivery. As we look to the expiry of the current policing contact in 2011, we want to make sure we have a plan that ensures everyone’s needs continue to be met efficiently and effectively.”

The consulting team of Perivale and Taylor has been chosen to conduct a comprehensive and inclusive review of police service requirements and will make recommendations that reflect the highest standards and meet all the demands of our dynamic community.

Currently, the RCMP provides policing service for Richmond. Other models could include a municipal police force, regional police force or contracting with another police service. However, the review does not imply dissatisfaction with the current service and renewing the RCMP is also one of the possible outcomes. The review will allow the City to assess which of the possible models would best serve the evolving Richmond community.

Information from officials and agencies will be gathered and the public may also contribute their thoughts and ideas by contacting the consultants care of policereview@richmond.ca to provide a written submission or request an interview. In addition there will be further opportunity for community input through public open houses to be held later this spring.

The policing review began in January and is scheduled for completion by mid-summer 2007.
