Pedestrian Safety Campaign – Always Make Eye Contact Before Crossing the Street
01 November 2007November is one of the most dangerous months for pedestrians. The darker, wet days create difficult driving conditions, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians.
To raise awareness about pedestrian safety, ICBC is launching a month-long campaign during November to remind pedestrians to:
- make eye contact before crossing the street
- dress to be seen by wearing brightly coloured clothing or reflective items, especially at night.
To kick off this campaign, ICBC, City of Richmond staff and Richmond RCMP officers will be at the crosswalk on Westminster Highway between London Plaza and the north parking lot of Richmond Centre on Friday, November 2 from 10:00 a.m. to noon to offer pedestrian safety tips and highlight a pilot project by the City to enhance pedestrian safety at crosswalks.
Under this pilot project, new features will be added to several crosswalks throughout the city with the following features:
- “LOOK” pavement stencil with directional arrow to remind pedestrians to check for oncoming traffic before stepping out on to the street
- stop bar for vehicles set back from the crosswalk to enhance the visibility of pedestrians
- raised buttons along the lane lines to discourage approaching vehicles from changing lanes to bypass a vehicle stopped at the crosswalk.
Watch for these improvements in the coming weeks.
