Richmond Committed to Retaining Night Market
18 May 2007
The Richmond Night Market will officially open its eighth season tonight and the City of Richmond is taking steps to ensure it will be back in future years.
“The Richmond Night Market has become a community institution that is extremely popular both with residents and visitors,” says Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “It’s a family event and we want it to stay in Richmond and to be around for a long time.”
The market’s current location on Vulcan Way in northeast Richmond will not be available to the Night Market’s operator, Target Event Productions after this year. Target Event’s lease on the property is expiring. In addition, the land is zoned for industrial use and the Night Market’s operations there have been allowed through a temporary use permit. That permit cannot be renewed due to limitations under provincial government legislation.
Target Events has expressed a preference to remain in Richmond and the City’s Business Liaison Manager has been assigned to help identify potential feasible sites and other solutions that would allow the Night Market to remain in Richmond.
“Richmond has recently adopted a Major Events Strategy which is designed to increase community vibrancy, tourism and economic development,” says Mayor Brodie. “We want to build on the success of the Night Market and other existing popular events, as well as creating fun and exciting new events so that Richmond will become known as a great events city.”
