Seniors Garden Party to Celebrate History of Farming
10 August 2007The third annual Old Fashioned Garden Party, themed “Celebrating Richmond’s Rich Agricultural History” will recognize farming in Richmond specific to berry production with an afternoon of high tea, light refreshments and entertainment for older adults in Richmond.
Recreation and Cultural Services and its community partners are hosting this citywide seniors event on Thursday, August 16, 2007 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Cultural Centre Plaza.
“The party is an opportunity to highlight the history of farming in Richmond and to show support for older adults in our community” says, Jeremy Boal, Recreation Leader. “Last year’s party was a tremendous success and we expect to continue the tradition of providing a first rate party out in the plaza.”
Various berry-related activities and special performers such as the blue grass band, the Mud Puddlers and the barbershop quartet, the Pension-Aires are scheduled for the themed event celebrating farming in Richmond. All those 55 years of age and older are encouraged to participate and to dress up in their best finery and old-fashioned hat in the colour of their favourite berry for the hat contest. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed and the best hat.
Cost for the event is $6.95 per person and space is limited so register now at your local community centre or phone the Registration Call Centre at (604) 276-4300.

Approximately 40 percent of Richmond’s land base (almost 5,000 hectares) is within the Agricultural Land Reserve. Cranberries are the most dominant agricultural crop in Richmond with almost 800 hectares of production. In 2001, Richmond accounted for almost 50 per cent of British Columbia’s cranberry acreage.
