City of Richmond Receives BC Hydro Power Smart Excellence Award

31 May 2007

Vancouver, BC - BC Hydro has honored the City of Richmond for its outstanding achievements in energy efficiency and innovation at the 15th Annual Power Smart Excellence Awards, held May 9th at the Fairmont Waterfront.

Awarded for Excellence in Energy Management, the City of Richmond earned the honor by embedding a culture of conservation throughout their operations. Everyone, from the Mayor on down is involved in conservation. Richmond incorporates higher energy performance into new and existing buildings, performs energy audits in all medium and large facilities and is investigating new technologies including web-based sports field lighting controls and LED streetlights. Richmond also approved the concept of creating, operating and owning a district energy utility to use waste heat and other sustainable energy sources to heat buildings.

The 2007 Power Smart Excellence Awards recognize customers and partners who are leading the way in implementing Power Smart solutions in the design, construction and renovation of buildings; applying innovative energy-efficient process improvements; or providing leadership in environmentally responsible practices and community involvement.

Power Smart is a cost-effective initiative that assists customers in conserving electricity, thereby saving them money and reducing further impacts on the environment.
