Richmond Celebrates Earth Day

18 April 2007

This Earth Day, there is something for everyone, in every corner of the City of Richmond!

Earth Day (April 22) is celebrated around the world as a collective expression of public will to create healthy, sustainable communities. Earth Day activities educate and mobilize people worldwide, promoting environmental protection and sustainability. It inspires action on personal, community, national, and international levels.

On Thursday, April 19, McRoberts Secondary School will be hosting EcoFest, an exhibition of environmental displays, guest speakers, and hands-on educational activities.

On Saturday, April 21, drop by either the Hamilton Community Centre or the Thompson Community Centre at 10 a.m. for a community clean-up. Residents will have an opportunity to meet each other and socialize while beautifying their neighbourhoods. If it’s entertainment you are looking for, the East Richmond Community Earth Day Celebration will kick off at noon with live bands and a barbecue in King George Park. This event will feature the opening of the new King George Park playground and a ground-breaking of the new Cambie Community Garden.

On Sunday, April 22, learn about gardening and nature at Terra Nova Rural Park. Composting and waterwise gardening workshops begin at 11 a.m. and a naturalist will lead interpretive nature walks through the park starting at 11:30 a.m. Local chef Ian Lai, from the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society, will guide participants in planting shrubs to beautify the park and in planting the Living Seat, an urban agricultural display from the World Urban Forum. Residents are encouraged to join up with Steveston or West Richmond Community Centres at 11 a.m. and bike along the dyke to the event. For even more nature, drop by the Richmond Nature Park for bird watching and an animal show.

All events will take place rain or shine. For information on Earth Day programs in your neighbourhood, visit our It's Easy Being Green page call the City of Richmond Parks Division at 604-244-1208.
