City of Richmond and Unions Reach Agreement to 2012
27 July 2007
Richmond City Council and the City’s inside and outside workers have reached a labour agreement providing a five year contract. Council ratified the contract on July 23, followed by a 96 per cent ratification by CUPE 394 on July 25 and a 96 per cent ratification by CUPE 718 on July 26.
The contract provides wage increases of 3 per cent for the first two years, followed by 3.5 per cent for the third year and 4 per cent for the final two years. The first three years are similar to the agreement reached by Port Moody. And the wage increase of 4 per cent in years four and five allow for the extension of the contract to five years, bringing its expiry past the 2010 Olympic Games allowing for labour stability for the long term.
Richmond’s labour negotiations, which began in January 2007, are the City’s and local unions’ second independent negotiations outside the Greater Vancouver Regional District Labour Relations Bureau. The City of Richmond left the Greater Vancouver Regional District Labour Relations function in 2002.
The City has worked hard to establish strong and positive relations with its unions and employees and values the work of its employees, not only during bargaining, but also through the term of the contract.
