Compost Awareness Week is May 6 to 12

Natural lawn and garden care is a growing concern in Richmond. International Compost Week, May 6th through the 12th, will showcase compost production and demonstrate how to use it in your yard and garden. This annual event was first held in Canada in 1995.

People across the GVRD are composting kitchen and yard waste, turning it into useful growing material and reducing our city's greenhouse gas emissions.

To help residents garden and landscape naturally, the City of Richmond has organized two free workshops. Both sessions take place at Terra Nova Park on Saturday, May 12th, 2007.

The first workshop from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will ground participants in the practice of Waterwise Gardening. All activities occur at the Waterwise Demonstration Garden at Terra Nova. Participants can learn how to significantly reduce their household water consumption and time spent maintaining their yard. With this knowledge you can still have a beautiful landscape. Topics include proper watering techniques, mulching and native plant selection.

A second workshop, Backyard and Worm Composting happens from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. All instruction takes place at the Compost Demonstration Garden at Terra Nova. It will prepare folks to set up and operate their own household composter. The advantage of worm composting is that it can be done indoors or outdoors, allowing year round composting, even for apartment dwellers.

Attendees will receive a lawn cup or blue canvas bag, and information handouts. There may be prizes too.

Terra Nova Park is located in Richmond at 2631 Westminster Highway.

Remember to bring gloves and dress for the weather.
