Richmond Celebrates Launch of BC Packers Online Exhibit
19 March 2007
The Richmond Museum and Heritage Services will be officially launching its online exhibition project, “In Their Words: The Story of BC Packers” at an upcoming celebration event on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at the Richmond Museum, located at 7700 Minoru Gate. For the past ten months, the Richmond Museum and Heritage Services, along with partners City of Richmond Archives, Gulf of Georgia Cannery and the Richmond School District, have been creating an online exhibition documenting the history of BC Packers Ltd. through the voices of its workers. This project explores the development and impact of BC Packers Ltd. upon the region’s culturally diverse communities. Utilizing oral, visual and textual resources, the stories of the First Nations, Japanese, Chinese, Indo-Canadian and European workers are presented as one story.
In April 2006, the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Canadian Culture Online Partnerships Fund, awarded the Richmond Museum & Heritage Services $106,853 to develop the project. The Partnerships Fund seeks to connect Canadians with the riches of the country’s heritage.
This project brings online little-known stories and experiences and provides a fun, educational and interactive website through which people can learn and experience life in a West Coast fishing and canning community. The project will be available online after March 29 by visiting www.intheirwords.ca.
