Richmond to Celebrate Asian Heritage Month

Richmond residents can celebrate our multicultural community this May by taking part in Asian Heritage Month activities.

In Richmond and across the country, the Government of Canada has designated the month of May as Asian Heritage Month. Together the City and community groups will celebrate Pan-Asian arts and culture and explore Asian heritage and traditions.

“Honouring the different cultures in our community and celebrating Asian Heritage Month is something everyone in our City can be truly proud of.” says, Alan Hill, Cultural Diversity Coordinator.

During the month of May, the following events will be featured:

Event Name: “Wreath/Wreathe” by Eliza Au
Date: April 22 to June 3
Location: Richmond Art Gallery
7700 Minoru Gate
Admission: Free
Family or 16+ years
Details: A ceramics exhibition on the theme of the wreath/wreathe, which references the cycle of life.

Details: An artistic representation of the legacy of Chinese immigration to Richmond drawing from master works from important periods in Chinese history.

Details: Take part in line dancing, ballroom dancing and Karaoke…Chinese style. An intercultural experience organized by the City of Richmond in partnership with Richmond Chinese Community Society.

Time: Ceremony performed at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. each day
Location: London Heritage Farm

Details: Watch and take part in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and learn more about Richmond’s historic Japanese heritage.

Details: A chance to experience traditional Asian drumming ranging from traditional South Asian Bhangra through to Japanese Taiko.

Event Name: “Asian Elements of Britannia Shipyard – Heritage Walk”

Details: Learn the stories behind the Murakami House and Boatworks, Richmond Boatworks, Chinese Bunkhouse, and the Japanese Duplex buildings at Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site. Tours offered in English and Cantonese.

Details: Classical Indian music and dance featuring Scheherazaad Cooper, Sudnya School of Dance and more. A fundraising event to support the efforts of the Canadian Red Cross.
