Richmond City Council Approves 2008 Budget

11 December 2007

Richmond Council has given initial approval to the City’s 2008 Operating Budget, which will result in a 3.92 per cent tax increase.

The budget maintains civic services at existing levels. Community safety remains a priority with new funding allocated for the hiring of three new police officers for the Richmond RCMP detachment. In addition two civilian risk management staff  will be hired by Richmond RCMP, freeing up two officers for general policing duties. The budget also provides continued funding for Richmond’s restorative justice program and additional funding to support various integrated RCMP teams.

The budget also includes increased funding for seniors programming, diversity services, the Gateway Theatre, Steveston Museum, major events planning and an affordable housing coordinator.

The budget was passed at Council’s December 10 meeting, which also saw Mayor Malcolm Brodie deliver his Annual Address, which highlighted the City’s achievements during 2007 and upcoming highlights for 2008. The Mayor’s annual address for 2007 is available on the Mayor's Annual Addresses page.
