Richmond Seeks Public Feedback on Permanent Tree Bylaw

17 February 2006

The City of Richmond is hosting a public open house to inform the public and generate feedback on the development of a permanent Tree Protection Bylaw. The meeting is being held on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 from 5 – 9 p.m.  at Richmond City Hall, First floor atrium & café, located at 6911 No. 3 Road, Richmond.

The City of Richmond implemented the interim Tree Protection Bylaw in December 2005 with the intent of approving a revised bylaw by April of this year through a consultation process. The bylaw was adopted to safeguard applicable trees on private and City property from being unnecessarily removed, killed or substantially damaged.

The new Tree Protection Bylaw will be based on the current Interim Tree Protection Bylaw #8014.

The City seeks to obtain further input from the public into the refinement of the bylaw details and will seek feedback on the following at the upcoming meeting:

  • The definition of “significant” tree
  • The definition of exemptions from the bylaw
  • Processes in conjunction with other permits

The open house will be a drop-in format and will be hosted by the City’s staff and project consultants.  The public’s participation will ensure that concerns will be heard and considered prior to Council adopting a final bylaw.
