“STARS” to Shine at Local Schools

21 March 2006

The City of Richmond’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee (TSAC) will be hosting an information meeting to discuss its new “Safer Traffic Around Richmond Schools” (STARS) initiative, which was officially launched during “Traffic Safety Awareness Week” held March 6-10, 2006.

Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) representatives from all public and private elementary schools in Richmond have been invited to attend this orientation meeting being held March 25, 2006.

The meeting will provide community stakeholders (parents, teachers, students, neighbours) with a framework and the tools to work with the City and other agencies (e.g., Richmond RCMP, ICBC) to help identify, investigate and resolve traffic safety concerns around schools, such as vehicle congestion/circulation on school property and potential pedestrian/vehicle conflicts around schools. In addition to TSAC members, representatives from Speed Watch and the Way to Go! Program will be available.

Those interested in participating in this meeting are asked to contact the PAC representatives at their local elementary school.

With the support of  TSAC members, PACs and community stakeholders will be encouraged to follow this new process to develop local solutions to address school zone traffic safety concerns as they arise. The STARS resource material is also available on the City’s web site at: http://www.richmond.ca/services/ttp/safety/initiative.htm

Background
The City’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee was formed in 1997 to create a co-operative partnership between City staff, community groups and other agencies that seeks to enhance traffic and pedestrian safety in Richmond. The Committee provides input and feedback on a wide range of traffic safety issues such as school zone concerns, neighbourhood traffic calming requests and education initiatives. TSAC has representation from the Richmond District Parents Association, ICBC, Richmond School District, Richmond RCMP, Richmond Fire-Rescue, and City of Richmond (Transportation and Community Bylaws departments).
