Musical Expressions of a Talented Soundman

02 February 2006

Musical Expressions’ resident soundman, Doug Smith, will come out from the shadows of the mixing board and take centre stage as the featured performer at the February 11, 2006 Musical Expressions concert.

Smith doesn't much care for genres and his work reflects that. “If it was written in the last 400 or 500 years I'm interested in it and if it's older than that well then I'm really interested in it,” he says.

When asked to describe his music, Smith responds “Roots I suppose, but really there's rock in there and sundry other things. I try to write music that resonates with people. I'm not too concerned about which bin my CDs belong in at the record store. At the end of the day there are only two kinds of music - good and bad.”

Smith cites influences ranging from Bach to The Sex Pistols, Townes Van Zandt, Charles Bukowski, Johnny Cash, Miles Davis and Tom Waits.

His show will comprise largely of his own material with a healthy dollop of material by the songwriters he's been most inspired by. “You can count on some Steve Earle tunes and probably a Townes Van Zandt song or two as well. Oh and Johnny Cash!”

Musical Expressions is an eclectic monthly showcase of local performers, hosted by well-known Richmond musician Cherelle Jardine.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with entertainment starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door (admission is free for children under 12). Tickets can be purchased at the Cultural Center at the front desk or by calling 604-231-6457. The Richmond Cultural Centre is located at 7700 Minoru Gate (beside the Richmond Public Library).
