"Keep Our Future Safe” with Traffic Safety Awareness

22 February 2006

Child safety will be the focus of the Richmond District Parents Association’s 9th Annual Traffic Safety Awareness Week, taking place March 6 - 10, 2006. The goal - to raise awareness about traffic safety, particularly around schools.

The annual campaign raises community awareness about creating safer traffic environments at schools and in neighbourhoods through driver and pedestrian education, and through the promotion of safe transportation options that reduce vehicle congestion.

This year’s campaign, “Keep our Future Safe”, launches the new STARS (Safer Traffic Around Richmond Schools) initiative. STARS provides community stakeholders, such as parents, teachers, and local neighbours, with a framework to work together to analyze and generate solutions to traffic safety concerns around schools.

Other “Keep Our Future Safe” initiatives taking place during the week include:

  • The Way to Go! “Walking Yellow Wednesday” inter-school challenge on Wednesday, March 8  with the kick-off event taking place at 8:30 a.m. at Hamilton Elementary School, 5180 Smith Drive. Mayor Malcolm Brodie, School Trustee and BC Lion Bobby Singh and the local Fire Chief will participate in a walk to the school with elementary school children starting at McLean Park at 8:00 a.m. The school with the highest student participation will receive the Mayor’s Golden Shoe trophy
  • Increased traffic enforcement and speed monitoring around school zones and at crosswalks

You can help keep our community “road safe” by reviewing skills for pedestrians and the best walking routes to school with your children, encouraging your children to participate in the “Walking Yellow Wednesday” challenge and obeying traffic safety regulations around schools.

Traffic Safety Awareness Week is presented by the Richmond District Parents Association and sponsored by ICBC Loss Prevention, the Autoplan Broker Road Safety Program, Richmond School Board and the City of Richmond, with the participation of Richmond RCMP, CARS BC, the Way to Go! School Program, BEST and Richmond Health Services.
