Remembrance Day Ceremonies - Saturday, November 11, 2006

November 8, 2006

Richmond, BC – The Royal Canadian Legion invites the community to attend this year’s Remembrance Day Cenotaph Ceremonies and parade.

Date: Saturday, November 11, 2006
Location: Richmond City Hall, located at 6911 No. 3 Road
Time: Marching commences at 10:25 am, followed by ceremonies at the Cenotaph at 10:40 am.

This year, we are painfully reminded of lives lost in wake of the war on terrorism. Canadian troops have been in Afghanistan maintaining peace and security for its citizens. Unfortunately, more than 30 Canadians have be killed this year doing so – that’s more than four times as many killed in 2006 than the past four years put together.

Richmond’s Remembrance Day parade includes a colour party, Royal Canadian Legion, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Association members, cadets, and representation from other service organizations.

Marching units will assemble in the City Hall parking area before proceeding at 10:25 a.m. along Granville Avenue to the Cenotaph located on No. 3 Road on the East side of City Hall, for the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Official ceremonies at the Cenotaph will begin at 10:40 a.m. The Mayor and a Silver Cross Mother representative will be among those placing official wreaths.

Following completion of the Cenotaph ceremonies, the marching units will proceed from the Cenotaph, west on Granville Avenue past a reviewing stand near the Richmond School Board offices, where Honoured Veteran Gordon C. Cook will receive parade salutes. The marching units will continue westward to access Minoru Park parking lot, opposite Moffatt Road, and to Minoru Pavilion, where the parade will conclude.

Portions of No. 3 Road, near City Hall, will be closed for approximately two and a half hours to facilitate the event. There will be minimal temporary traffic disruption along Granville Avenue and Minoru Boulevard during the post ceremony parade.
