Public Can Help Prevent Flooding

30 November 2006

The melting of accumulated snowfall may cause some drainage problems and significant pooling of water along roadways. The public can help City crews reduce the accumulation of street water and prevent flooding by taking a few minutes to ensure that drains and catch basins in their neighbourhoods are kept clear.

Debris such as leaves and fallen branches, along with accumulated snow and ice, can block storm sewer drains causing water to pool and overflow. City crews have shifted their focus from snow removal to ensuring drains and catch basins are clear, however the public’s assistance monitoring drainage around their property and clearing any minor blockages is extremely helpful. Please use extreme caution while clearing drains and catch basins as most are located on the edges of streets and active roadways.

Severely blocked drains or other flooding concerns should be reported directly to the Public Works 24-hour Dispatch line at 604-270-8721.
