10 August 2006

Seniors Garden Party
The second annual Old Fashioned Garden Party, themed “Off to the Races”, will recognize the history of Minoru Track with an afternoon of high tea, light refreshments and entertainment for older adults in Richmond.

“The party is an opportunity to showcase the history of Minoru and to show support for older adults in the community in a unique way” says, Jeremy Boal, Recreation Leader. “ Last year’s Garden Party was a tremendous success and we expect this year to be even better.”

Recreation and Cultural Services and its community partners are hosting this city-wide seniors event to learn more about an important part of Richmond’s history.

Date: Thursday, August 17, 2006
Time: 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Location: Cultural Centre Plaza
Cost: $5.95

Various activities and specials guests, including the 17 piece swing band Take Five, are scheduled for the themed event celebrating the racetrack’s history. All those 55 years of age and older are encouraged to participate and to dress up in their best finery and old-fashioned hats. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed and best hat.  Space is limited so register now at your local community centre.

In 1909, the first horse race track, known as Minoru Race Track, was opened in Richmond to an audience of 7,000 spectators. One year later, the first-ever Canadian airplane took off from the Minoru track. Today, Minoru Park remains significant as the “green jewel” of Richmond and home to some of the city’s main cultural and recreation centres.
