Lulu Series: Art in the City

08 March 2006

“Griot Stories and Shaman Dreams: The Arts and Community in the 21st Century”
The City of Richmond invites you to attend the third lecture in The 2006 Lulu Series: Art in the City. Hear guest speaker, William Cleveland, Founder and Director of the Center for the Study of Art and Community (CSA&C), Washington talk about how artists and their community collaborators are tackling daunting issues like community safety, education and economic development.

The Lulu Series: Art in the City is an annual free series of lectures. This presentation takes place on Thursday, March 30, 2006 from 7-9:30 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, Council Chambers located at 6911 No. 3 Road.

This talk will address the opportunities and challenges encountered when artists, arts organizations and non-arts community organizations join in partnership. Many artists are working to advance the development of healthy communities by responding to issues coming from the broader community. The result has been innovative partnerships between the creative community and schools, factories, jails, neighbourhood associations, senior centres, unemployment offices and every other place imaginable.

Mr. Cleveland is a writer and musician and through his work with the CSA&C develops opportunities to build new relationships between the arts and the broader community in the US and overseas. Prior to establishing the CSA&C in 1990, he directed the ArtReach Program in Sacramento, California’s Arts-in-Corrections Program, the California State Summer School for the Arts and the Walker Art Center’s Education Department.  His book, Art In Other Places, is published by the University of Massachusetts. His current book project, Art and Upheaval, will document the efforts of artists working to help resolve conflict, promote peace and rebuild civil society in communities in crisis around the world.

The Moderator is Andrew Wilhelm-Boyles, National Director, Creative City Network of Canada in Vancouver. The evening will begin with an Artistic Performance by Musqueum Singers Willy Dan and Alex and Jeff Dan. Madeline Kenoras will provide explanations of the Musqueum songs.

The Lulu Series: Art in the City is generously sponsored by Lafarge North America, Richmond Operations and 2nd Globe, Indianapolis, Indiana.

This is a free public lecture; Seating for this event in The Lulu Series is limited. Please RSVP to 604 231-6433 or suzanne.greening@richmond.ca.
