Cyclists Invited to Join in 6th Annual Island Tour

17 May 2006

The City of Richmond will be on a roll on Sunday, June 4, 2006 as cycling enthusiasts take to two wheels for the sixth annual Island City, by Bike Tour.

Island City, by Bike is Richmond’s annual cycling awareness event, offering cyclists a chance to tour Richmond, learn more about local bike routes and cycling safety, celebrate Bike Month and win prizes!

This year’s event will feature long (25.3 km) and short (8.8 km) routes, both of which will start and finish at Britannia Heritage Shipyard, 5180 Westwater Drive in Steveston. Participants can choose which group to ride with, but are encouraged to enjoy a slow-paced, scenic ride with the whole family. The short route will travel along the West Dyke Trail and return via Williams Road and Railway Avenue. The longer route will head out along the West Dyke and Middle Arm Trails to River Road and Capstan Way, and return via Garden City Road, Granville Avenue and Railway Avenue.

This event is a fun, family-oriented opportunity for the community to become familiar with Richmond’s extensive on- and off-street cycling network, and is an opportunity to realize the benefits of cycling as a viable means of transportation on the road to healthy, active living.

Plan to arrive at Britannia for the complimentary bike and helmet safety check being offered between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and to receive a safe-cycling souvenir (for the first 100 attendees). The rides depart from Britannia at 11:00 a.m. for the long ride, and 11:30 a.m. for the short ride. The groups will reconvene at Britannia about one hour later to enjoy refreshments and reveal the winners of a raffle prize draw, which features a grand prize of a one-day children’s bike camp courtesy of Pedalheads. Trained tour leaders will be conducting the rides, so all you need to bring, other than your bike, is your helmet and a sense of humour (or adventure) in the off-chance that it rains.
