City of Richmond and WCB in Friendly Commuter Challenge

Clean Air Day, June 7, 2006
For the second year, the City of Richmond and WorkSafeBC (Workers’ Compensation Board of BC) have entered into a friendly challenge to see which organization will have the most number of employees using alternative and sustainable modes of transportation to get to work during the Commuter Challenge, taking place on national Clean Air Day - Wednesday, June 7.
The Commuter Challenge is a friendly competition between municipalities, businesses and other organizations. Its goals are to reduce the number of vehicle trips to the workplace and to get as many people as possible to use active and/or sustainable modes of transportation, such as walking, bicycling, taking transit, and car/vanpooling.
Last year, the City won the inaugural challenge with WorkSafeBC when 10.15% of City employees found environmentally friendly ways to get to work versus 9.24% of Lower Mainland-based WorkSafeBC employees. The City has participated in the Commuter Challenge since its inception in 1996. Initiatives such as this demonstrate the City’s corporate and employees’ individual commitment to protecting our environment, while enjoying the benefits of increased physical activity.
