Richmond Residents Advised of Cloudy Water Issues

13 December 2006

Richmond residents may be receiving cloudy drinking water following a water pressure test conducted by the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD). The test was necessary to determine if water pressure could be maintained during a diversion of the waterflow supplying Richmond, which is required to accommodate Canada Line construction and passage along Cambie Street in Vancouver.

The test  began  in the evening of December 12 and was concluded the following morning and has resulted in significant turbidity or cloudy drinking water in areas of Richmond, south of Westminster Highway and west of Number 5 Road.

Disinfection levels within the system remain high and the water is still considered safe. The GVWD and Richmond continue to closely monitor the situation. City crews are currently flushing the water distribution system to remove the turbidity and anticipate water quality to improve over the coming hours.

While turbid water is not a concern for most customers, industry may note its presence, and those with weakened immune systems should continue taking extra precautions, such as boiling their water or use bottled water.
