City Launches Review of Building Practices

07 September 2006

The City of Richmond is launching a comprehensive review of geotechnical building practices to address changes in the BC Building Code 2006 as well as the evolving impact of construction activity within the community.

The City has issued a Request For Proposals for geotechnical consultants to conduct a review, which will examine how such factors as geology, soil and groundwater conditions, densification, and site preparation techniques and foundation system structures typically used in Richmond construction, can impact neighbouring properties.

The report will assist the City in developing Richmond-specific policies to reflect the heightened seismic requirements within the BC Building Code 2006, which is anticipated to be introduced later this year. The City will also use the report to assess whether the geotechnical aspects of specific site developments have been adequately addressed and to establish risk management policies for future developments, with a particular focus on high rise developments.
