What if we Build our Cities Around Places?
10 February 2006
Plan to attend the next lecture in The Lulu Series: Art in the City and hear guest speaker, Fred Kent, the president of Project for Public Spaces, Inc. (PPS), New York. He will talk about what makes places successful. Fred is a leading authority on revitalizing city spaces and one of the foremost thinkers in livability, smart growth and the future of the city.
The Lulu Series: Art in the City is an annual free series of lectures. This presentation takes place on February 23, 2006 from 7-9:30 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, Council Chambers located at 6911 No. 3 Road.
Public places are a stage for our public lives. They are the parks where celebrations are held, the sidewalks where friends run into each other and the "front porches" of our public institutions - city halls, libraries and post offices. When cities and neighbourhoods have thriving public spaces, residents have a strong sense of community; conversely, when they are lacking, they may feel less connected to each other.
Join Fred Kent's discussion on how Placemaking can bring immense positive change to neighbourhoods and public spaces, creating the kind of vital public life and community energy that has always been the most compelling reason people choose to live in cities. Project for Public Spaces (PPS) is a non-profit planning and design organization that is dedicated to advancing the comfort, attractiveness, and social, cultural and economic vitality of public spaces through research, education and technical assistance.
The Moderator is Andrew Wilhelm-Boyles, National Director, Creative City Network of Canada in Vancouver. The evening will begin with an Artistic Performance by Richmond’s Kenny and Winnie Wong on violin and keyboard.
The Lulu Series: Art in the City is generously sponsored by Lafarge North America, Richmond Operations and 2nd Globe, Indianapolis, Indiana.
This is a free public lecture. Please RSVP by phone at 604 231-6433 or email suzanne.greening@richmond.ca to reserve your seat.
