The purpose of this event is to showcase the excellent quality of sockeye salmon harvested by Nisga’a fishers on the Nass River, British Columbia. This salmon is unique as it is harvested using environmentally friendly “fish wheels” which use the force of the river current to turn the wheels and capture the salmon.
From 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. salmon meals will be sold to the public with proceeds going to the CKNW Orphans Fund. A Chef Demonstration will take place with local chefs displaying salmon preparation techniques to the public. Children’s arts and crafts events will be on going throughout the event.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is located in the historic fishing village of Steveston, at 12138 Fourth Avenue. Detailed directions are available at the Parks Canada site.
Nisga’a Fisheries has partnered with Canadian Fishing Company, Save-On Foods, Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, Parks Canada, Steveston Harbour Authority, CKNW, and BC Salmon Marketing Council to bring you this event.
