Celebrate Asian Heritage Month in Richmond

The month of May has been designated as Asian Heritage Month in Canada.  Asia is made up of over 50 different countries, all with their own unique culture, heritage and traditions.

Help celebrate Richmond's Cultural Diversity, plan to attend some of these upcoming events:

                              Collecting Asia: The Asian Heritage Collections, May 1-31
                              The Noh Mask Exhibit with work by artist, Hakuzan Kubo, May 1-5
         7:30-9pm    Lecture/demonstration by Hakuzan Kubo, speaking 
                              about the technique of Noh mask making, the history, the types 
                              of Noh masks and his life as an artist.

Richmond Regional Heritage Fair, presented by the Richmond Museum
Local students present their projects on Canadian history to the public. Fun heritage activities and performers.

Sunday, May 7, 7-8:30pm, Free
Richmond Cultural Centre, Lecture Hall, 7700 Minoru Gate
Traditional Japanese Noh Theatre, presented by the Richmond Cultural Centre and Pangaea Arts. Internationally acclaimed Noh Master, Akira Matsui (designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset by the government of Japan in 1998) and Noh expert, Richard Emmert, will present a lecture and demonstration on this art form.

Wednesday, May 10-Sunday, May 14
Richmond City Hall, Plaza, 6911 No. 3 Road
The Gull: The Steveston Noh Project, written by Daphne Marlatt and presented by Pangaea Arts. A new Canadian Noh play about the experiences of Japanese Canadian fishermen returning to Steveston after the internment years. Japanese Noh artists will be performing with Canadian performers.

Richmond Library, 7700 Minoru Gate
Book Launch, “Fighting for Canada”, published by the Department of National Defence. 2005 was proclaimed the ‘Year of the Veterans’ by the Canadian Federal Government. The Department of National Defence Visible Minority Advisory Group commissioned this book in recognition of the contributions made by Chinese and Japanese Canadians toward Canada’s war efforts.

explorWORD: Reflections of Richmond. Poets from India, Korea, China, Indonesia, Tibet and Iran will be featured to show how diversity enriches Canadian literature. The host for the evening will be Ashok Bhargava.

Artist Talk: Paul Mathieu, Making China in China. Paul will speak about his experience in China and how his ceramic artworks in the current RAG exhibition came into being.
