Musqueam join Richmond’s Countdown Celebration 2006

Sun dancers from the Musqueam First Nation will lead off Countdown Celebration 2006 at Richmond City Hall this Sunday, February 26, 2006.

Presented by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Countdown Celebration 2006 will coincide with the Torino 2006 Closing Celebrations and start the countdown to 2010 with a full day of entertainment, including:

  • Live music from some well-known performers, including  country roots meet Celtic sounds of The Higgins, Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms of Rumba Calzada, award-winning singer-songwriter Norman Foote and adult contemporary sounds of Richmond’s Cherelle Jardine
  • Highlights of the Torino 2006 Closing Ceremonies shown on a big screen
  • Sun dancers from the Musqueam First Nations, one of the four Host First Nations for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
  • Interactive cultural activities including belly dance and hip hop dance demonstrations
  • Street hockey in the City Hall driveway
  • Bouncy castle, face painting and the Richmond Arts Truck, where kids can make the flags of their favourite Olympic nations
  • Culinary treats including free cake and other hot food and drinks available for a small fee
  • Informative displays from local sports and community groups and City services, including a speed skating demonstration by the Richmond Rockets speed skating club
  • A rebroadcast of the Torino 2006 Gold Medal men’s hockey game for later risers
  • Chance to sign a congratulatory banner which will greet Torino 2006 Canadian Olympic team members upon their arrival home at Vancouver International Airport

In just four years, Richmond will be host to the speed skating competition in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Countdown Celebration 2006 will mark the beginning of the countdown to 2010. 

Countdown Celebration 2006 will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 26th, 2006 at Richmond City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Road.  Portions of the plaza will be covered so the event will take place rain or shine, but remember to dress warmly.
