Richmond RCMP and City Issue Positive Tickets

April 12, 2005

The Richmond RCMP and the City of Richmond recognize good deeds done by Richmond’s youth by issuing positive tickets, which complements the youth Asset Building Program.

The RCMP created the Positive Ticket Program in 2001 to strengthen the relationship between RCMP officers and Richmond’s youth, and to reward kids for staying out of trouble. The City’s program originally had Richmond youth workers handing out tickets, whereas now Richmond RCMP officers connect with and recognize youth around the clock. By combining the efforts of the City and the RCMP, Richmond youth will be recognized for their diligence in wearing a bike helmet, not smoking, playing without causing a disturbance, volunteering, and so on.

“This joint initiative demonstrates an integrated approach to connecting with the youth in our community,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “ Young people feel valued when they are recognized for their positive efforts. Council is pleased to support this initiative for the benefit of young people who continue to do good things in our community.”

A positive ticket provides one complimentary admission to the Hugh Boyd Pitch & Putt, to a public skate session at Minoru or Richmond ice arena, and to a public swim at Minoru, Watermania or an outdoor pool, sponsored by the City of Richmond. In addition, the positive ticket displays vital phone numbers for social and health youth services.

“We are committed to Richmond youth, and this valuable initiative combines the efforts of the City and the RCMP in connecting with our kids,” says Richmond RCMP Superintendent Ward Clapham. “This positive exchange between officers and youth builds important and trusting relationships, which is an important investment in our community.”

The positive ticket initiative supports the asset-building vision for Richmond to be the best place in North America to raise children and youth. Youth and adults are seeing the power they have in making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of young people.
