City Warms up to 2010 with Staff Challenge

27 September 2005

City of Richmond staff will be warming up for 2010 by participating in a corporate team challenge beginning on Tuesday, September 27, 2005.

Staff will swim, skate, walk, row and run their way to the finish line as 22 teams of five challenge each other in five events over the next three weeks. Each team member will participate in one of the prescheduled activities for 15 minutes while the remaining team members cheer from the sidelines.  Points will be given to teams based on their participation and awards will be given out at a luncheon following the event.

“Staff are really excited and the enthusiasm is building every day. We never expected to have over 100 City employees from various departments teamed up and ready to challenge each other.  It’s great to see such team spirit.” says, Alison Dennis, Wellness Coordinator.

“Warm up to 2010” is a City of Richmond Wellness program initiative that’s main focus is to motivate staff to get physically active and promote the benefits of healthy living. The City’s Wellness Program, created in November 1999 provides wellness programs that are accessible to all City staff in a supportive and enjoyable manner through encouragement and educational and social opportunities.

In June of 2005, the City joined the province of BC, Legacies Now and other BC municipalities in a challenge to be the healthiest community to ever host an Olympics by increasing physical activity by 20 per cent by 2010.
