Richmond Parents and Coaches Invited to High-Performance Sport Forum

April 20, 2005

The City of Richmond and the Richmond Sports Council will host a free informative session to discuss the implications of high-performance sport at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 25 at Gateway Theatre.

Parents and coaches are invited to learn more about the pressures and effects associated with high-performance sport and competition for young athletes. From participating in local school sports to intense competition, this informative session will examine the choices parents and coaches must make for youth at an early age, and the subsequent effects. Parents may also be uncertain about the safe level of intensive training for young athletes, including what age their children should begin activities, how intense the training should be and what training programs should include. These issues, and more, will be addressed by two industry professionals as part of the City of Richmond’s Playground to Podium program before the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Dr. David Cox, Ph.D., R.Psych, is a clinical psychologist and professor in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University. For the past 20 years, Dr. Cox has worked extensively with athletes and coaches at all levels of competition from the grassroots to the provincial, national and international levels. Most recently, Dr. Cox was with the Canadian Olympic team at the Salt Lake Winter Olympics.

Dr. Kristin Houghton, MD, practices pediatric rheumatology at BC children's Hospital and has recently taken a primary care sports medicine position at Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at UBC. Dr. Houghton played competitive soccer at the provincial level and was a varsity player at Cornell University, and has also coached soccer, basketball and Special Olympics soccer.

Admission is free for this forum, with no pre-registration required. Gateway Theatre is located at 6500 Gilbert Road in Richmond. For more information on this information session, please contact the City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services staff at 604-244-1208.
