Call for Amateur Skateboarders
9 August 2005
The City of Richmond, in collaboration with the City Centre Community Association, is hosting an Amateur Skateboard Competition on Saturday, August 20, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Richmond Skate Park on River Road near Lynas Lane.
This friendly yet competitive challenge is designed to further connect with the youth in our community, and renew interest in the park with this fun and safe event. Although primarily designed for young people, this event is open to all ages and skill levels.
The competition will be divided into two categories, with a separate competition for girls, with prizes and giveaways for the winners. The first category is called “SKATE,” which is based on the first skater executing a particular trick, and all other skaters following suit. Skaters are eliminated upon failing to duplicate the effort of the person ahead. The second category is called “BEST TRICK,” where each entrant is encouraged to show his or her skills on various structures in the park. The panel of judges will rate participants on technicality, originality, style and crowd appeal.
Along with appreciating the skill and ability of the entrants, spectators will enjoy tapping their feet to the live music by local trio No Luck Club, in support of their I11 Boogie Records release entitled “Happiness,” and their mix tape release entitled “They Robot.”
The entry fee is $10 for participants, and admission is free for spectators. Pre-registration is not required for participants, but tickets can be purchased in advance by calling Heidi Nagtegaal at 778-772-5870. Participants must wear helmets, and protective gear is optional.
The Lower Mainland skate board industry is also sponsoring the event, such as Underworld Skate Shop, West 49, United Riders, Circa, Dragon, Krew, Hip Hop Connection, REAL, Speedies, Spitfire and Emerica.
This youth-oriented event supports the asset-building vision for Richmond to be the best place in North America to raise children and youth. Youth and adults are seeing the power they have in making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of young people.
