Richmond Students Receive Public Works Scholarships
May 16, 2005
Benjamin Fisher and Brad Entwistle are the winners of the 2005 Public Works scholarships for Richmond students seeking to enter the public works field, in celebration of National Public Works week from May 15 to 21, 2005.
The Public Works scholarship program is jointly supported by the City of Richmond and by Local 394 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Scholarships are awarded annually to one or two students seeking to pursue post secondary education in a municipal public works environment, such as trades apprenticeship programs. The scholarships are being presented this week during National Public Works Week, which salutes those who work in the public works field.
“We are pleased to provide these scholarships to two very hard working and deserving students,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “These young men have demonstrated their commitment to the future care of our community.”
Benjamin will graduate this year from McMath Secondary School in Richmond, and works part-time as a landscaper for his father’s business. Ben is described by one of the School’s Councillors as having a kind and generous heart and will achieve any dream he sets his mind to.
Brad will also graduate this year from Hugh Boyd Secondary School in Richmond, and has always been determined to be a successful businessman. He sees an exciting future in the trades profession, and is looking forward to putting his determination to good work.
“Our Engineering & Public Works staff use their skill, experience and dedication to provide vital service to the public every day,” says Jeff Day, General Manager of Engineering and Public Works. “This scholarship gives our young people an opportunity to provide that same high level of public service in the future.”
“Our union members are proud to be able to help develop the next generation of trades people and to give something back to the community we serve,” says Tom Knowles of CUPE 394.
The scholarship will be presented Wednesday as part of National Public Works Week, which salutes those who work in the public works field and help support the City of Richmond’s vision to be the most appealing, livable and well-managed community in Canada.
