“Getting Richmond Moving” Family Challenge Deadline Nears
September 7, 2005
Hurry and get your Family Challenge Passports completed and handed into a local civic facility before September 12th for a chance to win. Each passport will be entered into the draw to be held on September 15th.
Families began the challenge last June when the passports along with lists of “50 Ways to Get Moving” were distributed to every child in the Richmond School District. Over the summer, children and their families were encouraged to record their activities, the length of time they participated and how many times they performed each activity.
To complement the challenge, a physical activity component was implemented into all summer daycamps with a focus on increasing youth’s awareness about the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices. Some daycamps created an active board to track all of the active activities that the kids did during the week at camp and then encouraged them to transfer the activities to their own Family Challenge Passport.
“Getting Richmond Moving” is an initiative that supports the City’s commitment to increase physical activity by 20 per cent by 2010 and is aimed at connecting the community to active living, building bridges to remove barriers to an active lifestyle and engaging the community to become healthy role models.
Watch for more “Getting Richmond Moving” initiatives this fall, including “iwalk” on October 5th. For more information, visit http://www.richmond.ca/parksrec/sports/rmdmoving/about.htm.
