Programming Plan Being Developed for Richmond Oval

The City of Richmond is soliciting interest from Richmond-based groups and organizations interested in becoming a user group in the Richmond Oval after the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Many groups have expressed an interest in having their programs located in the Richmond Oval and this Expression of Interest is intended to assist in evaluating the potential uses.

The Richmond Olympic Oval will be home for the long-track speed skating competition during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. After the Olympics, it will become a multi-purpose facility focussed on sports and wellness. The project also includes creation of a major new waterfront park and plaza, as well as development of a new urban neighbourhood connecting City Centre with the waterfront and extending along River Road.

The program vision offers the opportunity for the facility to be used for a wide variety of indoor ice and dry surface sport, cultural and special event programming and other uses. The City is now developing a programming plan that will identify specific uses and users groups for the facility.

Decisions regarding the proposed uses of the facility and outdoor plaza will be made during the month of March and following that further details will be required to define specific facility needs for the Design phase for the Oval. A Public Open House will be held in March to seek feedback from the general public on the proposed programming functions.

The current Expression of Interest is intended to seek interest from locally-based, sports, recreation, cultural and other community groups. A separate call will be made at a later date for businesses, professionals and other commercial interests who may be interested in obtaining space within the Oval.

Groups interested in making a submission can download an application form or  calling 604-276-4099. Deadline for Submissions is February 28, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. Further information is available by contacting Judi Hutchison at 604-276-4099.
