The City of Richmond will be half masting flags at all civic facilities on Sunday, September 25 to mark National Peace and Police Officer’s Memorial Day. This day honours police and peace officers killed in the line of service.
Flags at federal, provincial and local governments across the country will fly at half mast Sunday and a national memorial service will be held in Ottawa. The parade will include approximately 1000 police and peace officers. Law Enforcement officers from all over the province as well as Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington will be attending.
The parade will step off at about 10:00 a.m. from the intersection of Patterson and Kingsway and it will proceed westbound on Kingsway and into the main entrance to Central Park off Kingsway and then into the stadium. The service is expected to last about one hour and it will be followed by a parade back to Patterson.
Dignitaries in attendance will include the Deputy Commissioner Pacific Region and Commanding Officer of “E” Division, Bev Busson, as well as local, provincial and First Nations representatives. The service will be officiated by RCMP Chaplain, Jim Turner.
The RCMP invites the public, young and old to attend the memorial and pay respects to officers who have paid the ultimate price in keeping our communities’ safe. Motorists are also asked to take note that taffic will be closed on Kingsway from 10 a.m. to noon in the area of the parade.
