Pirate’s Gold Spun at Richmond Maritime Festival

July 13, 2005

Richmond's traditional connections with the sea will be celebrated with pirate stories, sea shanties, knot tying, a boat show and more at the 2nd annual Richmond Maritime Festival from Friday, August 19 to Sunday, August 21, 2005 at the Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site.

This fun, family event will give you the opportunity to see a variety of maritime exhibits, such as knot tying, rope making, model boat building, and net mending. The Richmond Public Library (Steveston Branch) will do pirate storytelling under the Storytelling tree. Displays include the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, Silver Anne Restoration, Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Richmond Carvers Society, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Richmond Artist Guild, Vancouver Port.

The whole family can enjoy live entertainment (sea songs and shanties) and participate in hands-on demonstrations.  On the water there will be a floating exhibition of boats for your viewing pleasure. Many boats will be at the docks of the shipyard, including a 1930's rum-runner, historic fishing boats and classic power and sail boats. Coast Capital Savings Youth Team will do face painting and temporary tattooing on Sunday only.

The festival  runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Friday, August 19 through Sunday, August 21, 2005 at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard, 5180 Westwater. The festival is sponsored by the Britannia Shipyard, the Steveston Rotary Club, M & M Meats, Bell and HSBC.
