Richmond’s “iwalk” Promotes Physical Activity

30 September 2005

The City of Richmond is collaborating for the third year with the Richmond School District on “iwalk” International Walk to School Week, October 3-7, 2005.

As part of the City’s ongoing commitment to “Getting Richmond Moving” and to further celebrate “iwalk”, Richmond school-aged children are invited to participate in the ”iwalk” Art Contest 2005. The theme for this year’s contest is “How Active Are You?”- show us how you enjoy being active in Richmond.

Poster sized artwork will be judged in four grade categories;  K-3, 4-7, 8-10 and 11-12, with one winner selected from each group. Winning artists will each receive a Richmond Arts Centre $100.00 gift certificate and will have their posters featured in Transit Shelter Ads throughout Richmond. There will also be an award of a free Urban Packers rental from the Richmond Museum for the school class who submits the most poster entries.

“Our goal this year is to have poster submissions from every school in Richmond,” says Suzanne Greening, Arts Coordinator for the City of Richmond, “and if last year was any indication, there will be some very creative and talented artwork.”

The iwalk Art Contest is part of a number of “Getting Richmond Moving” initiatives for 2005.  By providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, “Getting Richmond Moving” encourages people to get active and to support the City’s commitment to increase physical activity by 20 per cent by 2010.

The deadline for entries for the iwalk contest is Wednesday, October 19, 2005. Submissions can be sent to Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate.
