Ipsos-Reid Survey Reflects High Quality of Life in Richmond

June 24, 2005

The City of Richmond received a high rating from the community in its 2005 Quality of Life and Financial Planning Ipsos-Reid survey.

The City of Richmond, and five other BC municipalities, contracted Ipsos-Reid to conduct a random telephone survey to understand residents’ attitudes and opinions relating to the community’s overall quality of life. The City of Richmond surpassed the municipal norm in most categories, scoring either above normal or normal.

Of the 300 adult residents surveyed in Richmond, 98 per cent rated either very good or good when asked about the overall quality of life in Richmond. When asked why, respondents replied that Richmond is a convenient location, accessible to everything, has a low crime rate, is a safe community, residents enjoy living here, and that Richmond is a clean city, to name a few.

For City services, 95 per cent of respondents said they were either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the overall level and quality of services, and with recreation and cultural facilities, which is above the municipal norm. Also rated above the norm are police services and sports fields, scoring 93 per cent and 90 per cent respectively. Recycling and garbage services, fire services, parks, trails, recreation and cultural programs all received ratings in the 90 percentile, with communication and traffic management trailing at 76 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. Public works services received a 90 per cent satisfaction rate by residents, which further reflects the City’s continued commitment to effective and efficient service delivery.

Also scoring above the municipal norm, 89 per cent of residents said they receive very good or fairly good value for their tax dollars. Fifty-five per cent of residents said they prefer to increase taxes to maintain or expand City services, while 31 per cent preferred service cuts to maintain or reduce current taxes. Ten per cent of respondents said they had no preference.

Forty-seven per cent of Richmond residents visited the City’s web site in the last twelve months, which is also above the municipal norm, while 53 per cent had not. For more information on the Ipsos-Reid survey, please visit the City’s web site at http://www.richmond.ca/news.htm.
