Thomas Hobbs will Join the 13th Annual Landscape and Garden Contest Awards Gala

9 August 2005

Garden enthusiasts are invited to a free celebration of the City of Richmond’s 13th Annual Landscape and Garden Contest and Awards Gala on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Gateway Theatre, 6500 Gilbert Road, Richmond.

Thomas Hobbs is this year’s keynote speaker, who will share his experiences about “the good, the bad, and the ugly” gardening moments that caught his eye. This includes extremes from atrocious nightmare gardens to an abundance of beauty shots from all over the world.

Hobbs lectures regularly for Horticulture magazine, and has shared his passion through informative and engaging sessions to enthusiastic audiences across North America. Professed to be “born obsessed with plants,” Hobbs is sure to offer an insightful and informative keynote address to please even the greenest of thumbs.

Hobbs’ personal garden has been featured in virtually every gardening magazine including Garden Design, Traditional Home, Better Homes and Gardens, and House and Garden. He was also featured in Martha Stewart Living in 2000, and in Gardens Illustrated in 2004. His first book, Shocking Beauty, was published in 1999, and was a best seller throughout North America. His latest inspiring book, Jewel Box Garden, deals not only with plants, but also with his connection to them in a humourous and highly original way.

The many winners of this year’s Landscape and Garden Contest, in the four primary categories of residential gardening, commercial and institutional gardening, community gardens, and alternative gardening, will be recognized and receive prizes. The audience will also be entertained with an exciting multi-media presentation of breathtaking landscapes and hidden gardens.

Tickets are free for the evening gala (maximum of six tickets per person), and are available now on a first come first serve basis. Tickets can be picked up at the City’s Parks office at the Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane, or at the Front Counter at City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Road. For more information, contact the City’s Parks Department at 604-244-1208.
